Digging Spiritual Wells

As we step into 2025, God is inviting us to prepare our hearts and lives for a year of spiritual growth and renewal. Inspired by the story in 2 Kings 3, where God’s people dug ditches in faith before they saw the rain, we are embarking on a journey of Digging Spiritual Wells.

These wells represent the spiritual disciplines—prayer, fasting, Sabbath, and more—that open the way for God’s presence and provision in our lives.

This year, let’s dig deep and prepare our hearts to receive the living water that only Jesus can provide (John 7:38). Together, we’ll create space for Him to refresh, restore, and work through us in powerful ways in 2025.

Fasting and Prayer

Draws us closer to God by intentionally setting aside food, activities, or comforts to focus on Him.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is not a punishment; it’s a privilege! Through fasting, we open our hearts to His presence, experience breakthroughs, and grow in our spiritual walk.

Fasting is one of the most powerful tools God has given us. It helps us release the burdens of sin, seek restoration in relationships, receive spiritual renewal, and align with God’s plans. Matthew 6:33 reminds us, “When you seek God and His righteousness, He will reward you.”

Fasting also invites God’s supernatural power into our lives, bringing healing, provision, and clarity. It requires discipline and reliance on the Holy Spirit, and every moment spent fasting becomes an opportunity to draw closer to God.

How to Fast

1. Start with a Goal

Decide why you are fasting. Are you seeking God for direction, healing, breakthroughs, or a deeper relationship with Him? Be specific about your focus and write it down as a reminder.

2. Prepare Spiritually

  • Confess your sins and ask God to cleanse your heart (1 John 1:9).
  • Forgive others and seek forgiveness where needed (Mark 11:25; Matthew 5:23-24).
  • Surrender fully to God, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide you (Romans 12:1-2).
  • Read Scripture and pray daily, asking God to align your heart with His will.

3. Decide the Type of Fast Choose a fasting style that aligns with your health and spiritual goals:

  • Full Fast: Drink only liquids, such as water, mineral water, water with electrolytes, lemon water, or broths. These options help maintain hydration and provide essential nutrients to support your body during the fast.
  • Daniel Fast: Eat no meat, sweets, or bread; focus on fruits, vegetables, and water.
  • Partial Fast: Fast a specific meal or follow a time-based fast, such as from sunrise to sunset.

For Those Unable to Fast from Food:
If medical or other reasons prevent you from fasting food, don’t worry. Fasting is about the posture of your heart, not the specific method. Consider fasting from other things, such as social media, entertainment, or distractions. God sees and honors every sacrifice you make to draw closer to Him (1 Samuel 16:7). Do what you can, knowing that your heart of worship and surrender is what matters most to Him.

4. Replace Meals with Prayer and Scripture

Dedicate the time you would spend eating to praying, reading God’s Word, and reflecting on His promises.

Tips for a Fruitful Fast

Start Slowly: If fasting is new to you, begin with a partial fast or set aside one meal a day to seek God.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to maintain energy and focus during your fast.

Create a Routine: Set aside specific times to pray and read Scripture, ensuring your fast remains spiritually centered.

Overcome Temptations: When hunger or distractions arise, use them as opportunities to turn to God in prayer.

Be Practical: Avoid physically demanding activities during intense fasts to conserve energy.

Expect Challenges: The enemy may try to discourage you, but lean into God’s strength and persevere.
